The new charter in effect gives us assurances that we are now closer to a general election. However, the expectations are somewhat clouded as the military government has made it clear it will continue to maintain a tight grip on politics. It must understand that continued tight control may undermine the roadmap as well as the reconciliation process. It has been three years and tight control has failed to bring order to the country. The military regime must accept the fact that the roadmap will not be achieved under strict political control.
